Building the Underground Path for Better Connectivity
DEVCO Development & Engineering provided underground civil construction services for a Middle Mile Broadband Network project in Imperial County, California. The project combined horizontal directional drilling and traditional excavation methods to create underground pathways for new communications infrastructure while working around existing utilities and developed surfaces.
Project Scope
Directional Drilling
Horizontal directional drilling was utilized to install underground conduit while reducing the amount of open excavation required through developed portions of the project.
Utility Potholing
Existing utilities intersecting or running parallel to proposed underground alignments were verified through potholing before drilling and excavation activities progressed.
Trenching & Excavation
DEVCO performed trench excavation and associated civil work for portions of the underground system requiring open-cut construction.
Conduit Installation
Underground conduit was installed through directional bore and trench sections to establish pathways for the broadband network.
Handholes & Underground Structures
Excavation, placement, backfill and grade coordination were performed for underground pull boxes, handholes and related structures associated with the network.
Backfill & Compaction
Excavated areas were backfilled and mechanically compacted as the underground installation progressed in preparation for final restoration.
Spoils & Drilling Mud Management
Excavated material and drilling fluids generated by construction operations were removed and transported for proper disposal as required.
Surface Restoration
Disturbed asphalt, concrete and surface areas within the construction limits were restored following completion of the underground work.
