Steel Casing Bore Project – Stanislaus County, CA

Devco Development & Engineering completed a steel casing directional boring project in Stanislaus County, California. The scope of work included utility delineation, utility verification via potholing, saw cutting, directional boring, welded steel pipe assembly, debris haul-off, slurry backfill, and asphalt restoration.

Project Overview

This project involved the installation of a steel casing pipe using horizontal directional boring methods. Devco provided the labor, equipment, and field support needed to complete the bore while coordinating around existing utilities, excavation areas, and restoration requirements.

Utility Delineation

  • USA Dig Alert: Devco secured and maintained a valid USA Dig Alert ticket for public utility markings.
  • Utility Review: Existing utilities that intersected or ran parallel to the bore path were reviewed before excavation and boring operations began.
  • Private Utility Markings: Utility markings supplied by others were used to help identify potential conflicts along the bore path.

Utility Verification via Potholing

  • Performed potholing using the 8” core method to verify existing utility locations.
  • Confirmed utilities that intersected or ran near the proposed bore path.
  • Used utility verification to help reduce risk before directional boring operations.

Excavation and Directional Boring

  • Saw cut necessary bore pits, pothole locations, and pullbox areas.
  • Provided labor and equipment for approximately 100 linear feet of directional boring.
  • Directionally bored and installed 4” Schedule 40 FBE-coated steel pipe.
  • Assembled the steel pipe by means of arc welding prior to installation.
  • Provided steel plates for excavation areas as needed during construction.

Backfill and Site Restoration

  • Provided trucking and haul-off for debris generated during excavation and saw cutting.
  • Backfilled street excavation areas with slurry.
  • Repaired asphalt areas within the trench width at bore pit locations.
  • Coordinated restoration work to leave the work areas clean and ready for continued site use.

Project Considerations

  • Work required coordination around existing underground utilities.
  • Steel casing installation required proper pipe assembly, welding, and bore path preparation.
  • Excavation areas required temporary protection and proper backfill methods.
  • Directional boring helped limit the amount of open-cut excavation required for the installation.

Project Outcome

This Stanislaus County steel casing bore project was completed using directional boring methods to support underground utility infrastructure installation. Devco provided utility verification, excavation support, steel pipe assembly, boring, backfill, and asphalt restoration to complete the work in a professional and organized manner.
